Proposed Temporary Hockinson Park Dog Area
CALLING ALL ACTIVE MEMBERS TO VOTE!!!
(DEADLINE - September 12, 2010 - midnight)

We have the funds available to build and sites, but Parks & Rec does not have the funds to assist us. Therefore, all sites are "on hold". However, a temp site is available in Hockinson Meadows Community Park (with nearby parking) for DOGPAW to build.

Meanwhile, Dakota Memorial OLA is still very busy and the wait for Parks & Rec funds continues. So, please vote.

Please go to http://www.clarkdogpaw.org/olavote.shtml for member voting instructions and site description.

Brush Prairie Off-Leash Area

***Common countrywide nuisance, typically during Summer months. Reported at this site August 18, 2010***

Stinging insects have been reported near the blackberries on the east side of the park. Please stay away from that area. We will mark off that area and use over-the-counter (OTC) remedies to kill the insects.

Please research OTC products and stinging insects. If you have concerns about OTC products, stinging insects, and the safety of your pet, refrain from using this site. They can be very aggressive when disturbed. Again, please stay away from the east side.

UPDATE: Stinging insects are mostly gone, but the ground nest is near the path and so the partition will remain.

OTC: Spectracide Wasp & Hornet Killer3 (Prallethrin, Lambda Cyhalothrin) and RESCUE Reusable Yellowjacket Trap (attractant - no killing agent).

STF - Arriving & Entering ::.
Arriving at and Entering the Dog Park

Arriving:

Before leaving the car attach your dogs leash. An excited dog may be hard to handle, but it is the law to keep them on the leash. Trainers suggest walking your dog before visiting the dog park. This way your dog will be easier to control and better received by others. Do not hurry into the park, stop look and listen, see what is happening in side the park. This may be a park that you and your dog have visited many times before, but there could be a new dog or new owner inside. It pays to observe and assess the occupants already in the park before you enter. The number of cars in the parking lot will tell you the number of dogs in the park. You may also be able to recognize the cars of the regulars.

Entering:

After your assessment, check out the gate area. If others are entering and exiting, politely wait until they are clear. Make sure that you and other humans and dogs move away from the gate for safety. When you can safely enter, enter the first gate and make sure you close it behind you. The double gated area is for one family at a time. Your dogs leash should be taken off in this area. Carry your leash - you may need it, as service gates open or for an emergency first-aid tool. In leash free areas, leashed dogs may become targets or feel defensive (fight or flight). Also remember that you are asking your dog to enter the dog park, have your dog follow you into the park and close the gate behind you. Move away from the gate area and allow others to enter and exit.

What to Remember:

  • Observe from outside the park before entering.

  • Wait for the gate area to be clear before entering.

  • Always be sure the gate is latched firmly behind you.

  • Keep your dog on leash until inside the dog park.

  • Unleash your dog in the double gated area.

  • Keep your leash handy once in the park.

Mid-Year Report ::.

THANKS
Thank you - we understand that all supporters make off-leash possible and not any one person. However, we would like to thank Patricia Weinkauf, who founded DOGPAW in 2004. She was followed after by several board members and other supporters throughout the years.

CHARTS: http://www.clarkdogpaw.org/publicdocs/finance/

FINANCE
Costs have increased with added park maintenance, overflow construction, and more park amenities. Even with cost nearly doubled in 2009, we still kept our bank balance virtually the same, as the previous years. It is half way through 2010 and our revenue has nearly matched that of previous year-end statements!!!

DEVELOPMENT
We built Washougal Off-Leash Dog Park. Also, we have added more park amenities (waste bins, benches, water, etc) and a fun lure course for events!!! Please contact "construction" at clarkdogpaw.org to help with current and future projects (amenities, new park, new small dog area)
.

MEMBERSHIP
During 2004 through 2006, membership skyrocketed. Then, plummeted and stagnated in 2007 through 2008 along with funds. Looking back, there was a mistaken belief that an equal number of members joined and expired. This was only true in the beginning. Expired (inactive) members quickly multiplied, as members and pets moved or passed on. This lead us to believe we had more members, than we actually did. To be more accurate, our database has been updated and we now only count current, paid-to-date (active) members. After reaching out to those from our past and new visitors at the parks, membership has again skyrocketed from less than 500 to over 700 members in the past 1.5 years!!!

SAFETY
We provide the Clark County Off-Leash Area Guide to new members. Also, we hand-out "safety reminder" cards to park visitors. Coming soon - safety signs at our parks and tips via monthly eNews for our members!!!

ADHOC
Various parks have rotated membership drives with lure coursing. Prior to events we have scheduled cleanup parties to spruce-up.

In June, we had a very successful Dog Days of Summer event with a record number in vendor attendance. We are also planning an upcoming Dogtoberfest event (Oct 16). Please come to our planning meet (Sep 29)!!!

Thanks to everyone that supported a Camas Build - your support via meetings and petitions really helped. However, we could not get the needed maintenance support to make this successful. This project, as with all of our projects, is "on hold" awaiting Parks & Rec funding. Please tell our officials that dog parks are important via the Blue Ribbon Commission. However, we can go ahead with a temp spot in Hockinson with nearby parking - please let us know with your vote to proceed.
