The 3 1/2 acre space we are currently using at Pacific is slated to be developed into a Fire station and that work was scheduled to begin after we moved into our permanent 8 acre home in June 2008. The Fire Department has determined that they can realize some very significant cost savings by starting the construction on that site this winter, which will require us to move out before the new off leash park is ready. Pete Capell, Clark County Public Works Director, has been working very hard on our behalf to ensure that we would have an alternate site for off leash use before the permanent park opens in June. Dogpaw board representatives will be meeting again with Pete and Fire Department officials on December 27th to work out the details. The Dogpaw board is very pleased at how the County officials are working with us to be sure the needs of dog owners are met. We will provide some additional information after the meeting on Dec 27th, but the new site will be very near Pacific Park, on 172nd and will be larger than the space we have now. We also want to take this opportunity to remind all who use the off leash parks that it is very important that we all respect the rules of the park. Please review those rules on the signs posted at the parks, as well as on our web site. Recently a structure was erected at Pacific, which was in violation of the contract we have with the Parks department for the off leash space. They have worked with us to allow the shelter to remain temporarily. We need to remind all that you cannot bring things into the park and leave them, ie, chairs, car seats, etc. This is going to be increasingly important when we move into our new temporary space which is next to a church and surrounded by houses. We will need to be very vigilant about observing the rules or we risk loosing access to this temporary space. The Dogpaw board will be planning our annual meeting for February and will update you as we get things set up. Please let us know if there are any specific things you would like to see addressed at the meeting. Dogpaw has alot to be proud of and we could not have done it without the support of all our members. The new Dakota off leash park at Pacific is the first time any public funds will be used for off leash space and we are working on a couple more off leash areas we hope to have open in the next year or so.
